316L Stainless Steel Resists Corrosion for 2,256 Hours in CASS Salt Fog
The Challenge
For coastal buildings, marine infrastructure, pool enclosures, and any high-chloride application, material selection is a long-term liability question. 316L stainless steel is widely specified for corrosion resistance, but independent, point-of-specification verification is not always available. This test establishes quantified, third-party salt-spray endurance data for 316L tube. Where a project uses coated carbon steel rather than stainless in the same conditions, equivalent protection comes from a coating such as Metal Shield.
The Test
Testing by the CNAS-accredited (and ILAC-MRA recognized) Laboratory Center of Guangdong Kin Long. Method: GB/T 10125-2012 - the CASS (copper-accelerated acetic-acid salt spray) variant, significantly more aggressive than standard neutral salt spray. Chamber at 50 °C, 45° placement, run until the first sign of rust.
The Results
The sample remained completely corrosion-free through 2,160 continuous hours - nearly 90 days. The first observable rust, rated 'slight,' did not appear until 2,256 hours.

GB/T 10125-2012 is the Chinese national standard for salt-spray corrosion testing in artificial atmospheres. The CASS variant is among the most demanding accelerated corrosion tests for metals and coatings, widely accepted in architectural, automotive, and industrial hardware specifications.
